What should every woman try at least once in her life? traveling to a new place alone. or sneaking backstage at a concert. you will learn so much about yourself in both situations.

What is on your bookshelf? bookcase full of books//vinyls topped with my little sacred center of crystals, sage & candles. some of my faves: a peoples history of the united states//howard zinn, pedagogy of the oppressed//paulo freire, futebol ao sol e a sombra//eduardo galeano.

What is your biggest guilty pleasure? binge watching chopped & then trying to recreate the atmosphere when cooking while belting out musical soundtracks. it’s truly exhilarating.

What album has had the biggest impact on your life? pretty expected, but the strokes “is this it” really changed my life in ways i can not find the right words for. for better or worse? well, my heart, mind & soul say for the better, my bank account says for worse.

Who is your favorite living artist? i recently discovered a local artist by the name of Rah Azul. his use of iconic imagery and vibrant colors is mesmerizing. & ofc fabrizio moretti both musically//visually. & forever the first artist i knew and loved, my father.

How would you describe your personal style? lazy hipster chic meets 30 shades of black. I live for comfort & of course a good deal. lots of leggings + band shirts + denim + lots and lots of accessories.

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you? im a big nerd. i think i finished all math//science classes offered by 11th grade & even asked for a TI-89 titanium calculator and file box to store all my papers for christmas once….i still use the filebox btw, very handy.

What does Modern Girls mean to you? im heavily influenced by the quote “the personal is political.” as a first gen mexicana who grew up with a heart in the entertainment world, my aspirations were often hindered due to first gen family expectations. this project is a result of the longing to create a space for young womyn to explore//connect with narratives of people who look//feel//have struggled like them and are confident, successful & thriving in worlds where music+fashion+art intersect with personal politics. modern girls is a safe space for marginalized individuals pursuing futures in spaces previously reconciled as “not for them” to be inspired & heard. when so much of the real world is constantly telling us no, we want to be a new creative world that is just full of YAS!
